Extended user experience with real-time video applications
Network operators and service providers seek new attractive services which help them increase revenues and reduce churn.
Handset manufactures can provide a better user experience and differentiate themselves from competitors by enabling their
terminals with advanced video applications compliant to the latest standards.
3G-324M and IMS based Video Telephony
As experts in embedded systems and leaders in IP wireless technologies, fg microtec offers a Video Telephony application
that allows full duplex communication in broadband wireless networks such as UMTS or Wi-Fi. The solution,
fgVCC, is based on open standards adopted by the 3GPP for the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS). Non-IMS
networks can also benefit from fgVCC.
fgVCC also supports the circuit switched version of the Video Telephony service according to the 3G-324M terminal capability
definition as specified by the 3GPP. This way, the service provider ensures a smooth migration between the existing 3G-
324M solution towards the future IMS based one, being able to combine both seamlessly for customized services.
See-What-I-See
As an example of the benefits of combining circuit switched and packet switched services, fgVCC provides a 'See-What-I-See'
application that allows the sharing of live video streams between mobile users while talking to each other over a GSM or
UMTS circuit switched connection. These video streams are captured by the phone's camera or simply taken from video files
stored in the phone's memory.
See-What-I-See is an innovative video sharing application that
enables users to extend their ways of communication. Since it
operates in half-duplex mode and it does not requires simultaneous
audio transmission over the IP network, it can be easily
deployed by operators in 2.5G networks like GPRS or EDGE.
Based on fgIMS Multimedia Framework
fgVCC is fully integrated in fg microtec's IMS Framework (fgIMS). This framework allows the terminal manufacturer to easily
integrate and develop multimedia services in the handset. All IMS basic functionalities such as registration, authentication,
session management and multimedia control are provided by the framework, together with an adaptation layer for the specific
target system and OS. fgVCC can be ported to any target plattform in a matter of days, thanks to the fgIMS concept. Only
certain extensions for the circuit switched Video Telephony service are necessary. For the packet switched based applications,
all necessary protocols are already provided by the framework (e.g. SIP, RTP, Media Controller, etc.).
